Basic Footwork

Introduction to Footwork - As in most other sports and activities, a stable base and positioning is key to learning fundamentals. Boxing is no different. Get a solid base where you can give force (offensive punches), and take force (defend punches), then practice using that base while in motion. Here are your basic footwork patterns. - Coach Chadrick

  • Right & Left
  • L-shape drill
  • Shuffles

Forward & Backward

Imagine you have four feet, and move the foot first in the direction you intend to move in.

The front foot moves forwards, and the back foot moves backwards first.

Right & Left

Imagine you have four feet, and move the foot first in the direction you intend to move in.

The right foot moves right, and the left foot moves left first.

'L' Shapes

Drill basic footwork by working 90 degree angles in a simple L-shape of

  • two steps forward
  • two steps back
  • two steps right
  • two steps left
  • repeat

Shuffles/Big Circles

Moving to the left with a large left foot step, recover your base with an equal distance step with your right foot. Keeping your base slightly more square (showing more chest), maintain stance integrity by keeping your lead foot ahead of the rear foot (be aware to not switch stances). Similar for moving to the right except traveling to the right with a large right foot step, recover your base with an equal distance step with your left foot.

Coaching Point: sometimes it helps to step then drag the recovering foot to prevent excessive "bounding" where the feet come too close together.
